Tyree Named All-Region

Congratulations are in order for senior Andrew Tyree who was name as second-team pitcher to the All-Northwest Region team. Andrew was also name to the All-Commonwealth first team as a pitcher and as reported earlier on this blog. Andrew will continue playing baseball at Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD, next year. Job well done Andrew and best of luck in your college career!

Last year Brooke Point had only two players recognized in the All-District Selections. One of those players was sophomore David Dilegge selected as the 2nd Team second baseman. He repeated this year at 2nd base and also as a Utility Player for the second year in a row. Senior Brian Hudson was the other Black-Hawk selected as Honorable Mention outfielder. Hudson has finished his freshman year playing football a Liberty University on a scholarship. Next year as a sophomore were all expecting big things out of Hudson at Liberty.

The Black-Hawks very successful 2010 season came to end Monday night with a 3-0 loss to Osborn in the Northwest Region playoffs.

More on the Brooke Point, Riverbend Game

More on the game at Virginia Preps - Brooke Point and Riverbend battle for regional bid, full report by Leonard Pumphrey. Excerpt follows:

... The Bears from Riverbend registered the first three runs of the game. The scoring started in the second inning. Taylor Fennewald kicked off the inning with a double to the opposite field. Nathaniel Traugh followed that up with a single up the middle plating Fennewald. Traugh worked his way around to third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Garrett Rioux.

In the fifth inning Riverbend added a run with a single, then a force out followed by a double by Nick Lacik. No more scoring occurred and going into the bottom of the 5th the Bears held a comfortable 3-0 lead. The Blackhawks started their come back in the bottom of the frame. With two out David Dilegge and J,J. McDaniel each singled. Travis Cole then delivered the big blow of the night a 3 run homer to dead center field. The inning ended with the scored tied at 3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Brooke Point scored the winning runs. The inning started harmlessly with a pop to short. The second batter than struck out, but made it to first when the catcher threw the ball high to first after not catching the pitch. Drew Bell then walked, and Ryan Carder followed with a single to load the bases. David Dilegge then followed with a sharp liner just past the shortstop who was playing on the infield grass. JJ McDaniel then walked allowing the 5th run to score.

As most games go the Bears would not go quietly, they put two men on before a pop out to second ended the game. Final score Brooke Point 5 Riverbend 3...

The Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star has a roundup of Brooke Point's 5-3 win over Riverbend last night in the Commonwealth District tournament championship game.

"We've put in a lot of hard work over 10 years and it's finally paid off," Mays said. "When you have a bunch of kids like I have right now, it's easy."

Starting pitcher Chris Denno went the distance last night with a strong outing. Catcher Travis Cole has a three-run homer that tied the game at 3-3. First baseman David Dilegge went 3-4 at the plate to include a RBI single that brought across the go-ahead run.

Next up is Osbourn High school on Monday at the Northwest Regionals.

No panic in pressure-tested Hawks at the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star. Here are some excerpts:

...in the bottom of the sixth inning yesterday, they found themselves on
the short end of a 2-1 score against the Wildcats and facing an early exit from
the tournament, as well as an end to their season.

But there's no panic on this team--not this year, just a lot of
confidence.

With third baseman J.J. McDaniel lighting the spark with his sixth home run
of the year, Brooke Point scored three runs in its final at-bat and then hung on
for an exciting 4-3 victory.

The win earned the second-seeded Black-Hawks (12-9) their second straight
appearance in the district's championship game.

Brooke Point will host Riverbend, a 6-5 winner over top-seeded North
Stafford, for the district title tomorrow. The winner of that game will get a
berth in the Northwest Region playoffs next week, along with the
Wolverines...

Paced by McDaniel's power hitting and some solid pitching, the Black-Hawks
had rolled through two games last week, including an 11-1 pounding of the
Wildcats in their final regular season game...

(Evan) Houde (6-3) gave the Black-Hawks an early lift with his steady
pitching. He struck out five and scattered six hits as Brooke Point grabbed a
1-0 lead in the first, and then saw the Wildcats rally for a 2-1 advantage in
the middle frames...

His (McDaniel) home run did wonders for the Black-Hawks' confidence. Chris
Denno walked and Gary Pisall doubled to left. With two outs, No. 9 hitter Connor
O'Hara's line drive to center then scored both runners...

Commonwealth District Playoffs

In other Commonwealth District playoff action last night the North Stafford Wolverines defeated the Albemarle Patriots 4-3, the Riverbend Bears defeated the Massaponax Panthers 5-2, and the Mountain View Wildcats defeated the Colonial Forge Eagles 3-0.

Brooke Point will host Mountain View and North Stafford will host Riverbend in Tuesday's semifinal contests. Both games are scheduled for 6:00 P.M.

Brooke Point 9, Stafford 2

The Black-Hawks opened the Commonwealth District playoffs with an impressive win last night against the visiting Indians 9-2. Andrew Tyree pitched a complete game and notched his fifth consecutive win while allowing only 4 hits.

Third baseman J.J. McDaniel hit a two-run homerun in the fourth inning and finished the night 3-for-4 with five RBIs and two runs scored. It was McDaniel's fifth homer of the season.

First baseman David Dilegge went 3-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBIs while right fielder Gary Pisall went 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Brooke Point will host Mountain View on Tuesday, at 6 p.m., in the District semifinals.

The Black-Hawks defeated the Mountain View Wildcats Tuesday 11-1 at Brooke Point. Pitcher Evan Houde allowed only 3 hits while striking out 5 to earn his fifth win of the season.

Third baseman J.J. McDaniel (2-2) had two hits including a home run. Catcher Travis Cole (1-1) also homered for the Hawks. A roundup of the rest of Brooke Point’s offense follows: first baseman Andrew Tyree (2-2); second baseman David Dilegge, outfielder Ryan Carder, and shortstop Chris Denno (all 1-3); outfielder Gary Pissall (1-2), outfielder Drew Bell and pinch hitter Brandon Gonzales (both 1-1).

Two articles, one in the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star and one in the Washington Post, provide great summaries of last night's Black-Hawks victory over the 1st-place North Stafford Wolverines.

Excerpts from the Free Lance-Star (Black-Hawks have Wolverines' number):

North Stafford's march to the Commonwealth District baseball title this season is its third under coach Jim Labrusciano.

On Tuesday, the Wolverines clinched the regular- season championship and a berth in the upcoming Northwest Region playoffs later this month.

And while most of the district has had trouble finding a way to beat the talented Wolverines and their deep pitching staff, there's one team that has thrived on the opportunity...

"We've had great pitching and played great defense all year, and today we got the hits when we needed them," said Brooke Point coach Brian Mays after watching his Black-Hawks claim a 5-1 victory over North Stafford last night.

It was the second time this season the Black-Hawks have handed the Wolverines a district loss. Last month, they rode the pitching of Evan Houde and a surge of power hitting to a 9-3 victory...

"It's a big rivalry when we play them in any sport," said winning pitcher Andrew Tyree. "And we seem to hit the ball better whenever we play them."

Tyree's complete-game effort on the mound gave Brooke Point a big boost in dealing the Wolverines (12-7, 10-3) their third district loss. The senior transfer from Caroline struck out nine and scattered eight hits to improve his record to 4-0.

"He's been a pleasant surprise," said Mays. "He's a good kid and a warrior. He's aggressive and he doesn't back down."...

Tyree held the Wolverines' normally potent bats in check for most of the game. He also got a lift from the Black-Hawks' defense on several occasions to help seal the win.

One defensive gem came in the top of the fifth. Thomas Brandon and Nate Connaughton led off the frame with singles to start a potential rally for North Stafford, which trailed 2-0 at that point.

But the next batter, Steve Buel, popped up to Tyree, who fired a strike to second to double-off Brandon. Black-Hawks catcher Travis Cole then threw out Connaughton on a steal attempt at second.

The Black-Hawks got only seven hits in the game, but made the most of them. First baseman David Dilegge scored their first run in the bottom of the first after he reached on an error and then came home on a double by J.J. McDaniel.

Dilegge increased the Brooke Point lead to 2-0 in the third, when he drilled the first home run of his career. The junior drove a change-up from Connaughton over the right-center field fence.

"I got behind it and then the wind helped it a little," Dilegge said. "Once we started hitting, I think we fed off each other."

The Black-Hawks padded their lead with insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings. In the sixth, they scored twice on RBI hits by Houde and Matt Cammuse...

Excerpts from the Washington Post (Back in a comfortable place, Brooke Point's Tyree excels):

... Tyree arrived at Brooke Point this semester, the result of a family move to Stafford County after a rocky 11 months that started when Tyree's father, Conrad II, died of heart failure on Feb. 13, 2009.

After his father's death, Andrew Tyree snapped at his mother and his friends. He also began skipping school. He gained nearly 20 pounds and became a shell of the right-handed pitcher he once was, one with a devastating change-up and a looping curveball.

"I got away from what I was and started going down the wrong path," said Tyree, who credited his arrival at Brooke Point, giving him the chance to join a few close friends with whom he had grown up playing baseball, for the turnaround in his life.

On Friday night, Tyree, like he always does, began the night by writing his dad's name in the dirt on the back of the pitcher's mound. He said a prayer. And once the game started, he dominated.

Tyree went all seven innings, allowing eight hits and walking one. He struck out nine batters, including all three in the fourth inning, to run his record to 4-0...

He threw 69 of his 105 pitches for strikes, including 18 of 29 first-pitch strikes...

Brooke Point scored in the bottom of the first on third baseman J.J. McDaniel's two-out double and went ahead 2-0 in the third inning after first baseman David Dilegge's first career home run.

The Black-Hawks struck again on a wild pitch in the fifth before second baseman Evan Houde and designated hitter Matt Cammuse each had run-scoring hits in the sixth...

Panthers 4, Black-Hawks 0

In Commonwealth District action last night the Massaponax Panthers defeated the Black-Hawks 4-0 at Brooke Point.

Black-Hawks starting pitcher Evan Houde threw a complete game, giving up just 4 hits while striking out 12 Massaponax batters in a tough loss.

Brooke-Point's bats were almost silent, scraping up just 3 hits for the night.

Panther's third baseman Cameron Tubbs hit 2 solo homeruns and starting pitcher Patrick Skinner got the win for Massaponax.

Brooke Point hosts 1st place North Stafford Friday night at Brooke Point.

Colonial Forge 6, Brooke Point 4

Colonial Forge's Travis Ferrick was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI and Ben Morgan scored twice as the Eagles got a Commonwealth District win over the Black-Hawks last night at Colonial Forge. Eagles starter Jake Black went 5 innings for the win.

Kyle Mikula went 2-for-4 for the Eagles and Thomas Washington and David Dilegge both went 3-for-4 for Brooke Point. The Black-Hawks face the Bears at Riverbend on Friday.

Albemarle 3, Brooke Point 1

The Black-Hawks dropped their second straight Commonwealth District game last night 3-1 to the Patriots in Charlottesville.

While Brooke Point starter J.J. McDaniel had a good outing, allowing only 3 runs in 4 innings, the Black-Hawks were limited to only one unearned run and one hit. David Dilegge relieved McDaniel in the 5th and pitched two scoreless innings. Shortstop Chris Denno’s single in the 2nd inning was the extent of Brooke Point’s offense for the game.

Albemarle’s starting pitcher Geran Steljes went the distance for the win. Josh Sites went 3 for 3 to lead the Patriot’s offense.

The Black-Hawks face the Eagles tonight at Colonial Forge.
